MADE IT DOWN

a short film by Natalia Gaytan

This short film explores memory— how we avoid it, try to outrun it, and ultimately how we can’t move past it until we embrace it. It’s told through the eyes of a writer and inspired by how they talk about memory and control dancing hand in hand to give us meaning.

Ocean Vuong , On This Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous: “You asked me what it’s like to be a writer and I’m giving you a mess, I know. But it’s a mess, Ma— I’m not making this up. I made it down. That’s what writing is, after all the nonsense, getting down so low the world offers a merciful new angle.”

Zadie Smith, Intimations: “Writing is routinely described as ‘creative’ — this has never struck me as the correct word. (…) Writing is control. (…) We try to adapt, to learn, to accommodate, sometimes resisting, other times submitting to, whatever confronts us. But writers go further: they take this largely shapeless bewilderment and pour it into a mold of their own devising.”
